Amidst the growing calls by Nigerians for the country' s Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, to resign or be sacked by President Muhammadu Buhari over his past radical comments and alleged links with terrorists, the recent comment by the country' s influential and controversial Muslim Scholar, Sheikh Gumi, reminds the country of his similar story that saw his arrest and detention in Saudi Arabia.
Sheikh Gumi stirred reactions in the country when he boldly claimed in reaction to the calls for Isa Pantami' s resignation, that Nigerians will regret it if the Minister resigns or be sacked.
This strong message from the Muslim Scholar has not only stirred reactions, but has reminded Nigerians of his arrest in Saudi Arabia over alleged links with terrorists that got him detained in the country for six months in 2010.
Relating to the story, many Nigerians have opined that this clearly justifies his support for Isa Pantami who has been alleged for having links with terrorists due to his past comments.
Pantami' s Controversial Comments
In some viral video clips which were of Isa Pantami' s radical teachings back then at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) where he graduated in 2003, the Minister who was a Chief Iman has been quoted saying that he considered Osama Bin Laden " a better Muslim" than himself. He was also quoted saying, " We are all happy whenever unbelievers are being killed but the Sharia does not allow us to kill them without a reason. "
In addition, he also reportedly criticized Politicians and vowed never to go into politics, neither will he take up any political position in the country. Ironically today, Isa Pantami is a full- fledge Politician as many question his competency and trust regarding his extremist views.
Gumi' s Detention In Saudi Arabia
According to Sahara Reporters, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi was arrested on request by the United states government. He was then arrested and also detained in Saudi Arabia for over 6 months in 2010 by the Saudi Arabian government.
The Muslim Scholar was arrested for allegedly exchanging emails and also relating with a Nigerian terrorists and bomber by the name Farouk Abdumutallab.
In Nigeria, Sheikh Gumi has been relentlessly advocating for bandits in Nigeria to be granted amnesty with claims that they are not criminals.
However, his arrest in Saudi Arabia came after the US security browsed through Abdulmutallab' s e- mail and found out that it corresponded with him shortly before an attempt by the terrorist to bomb a plane on the 25th December 2009 in the US.
Sahara Reporters further revealed that Gumi was first taken to Jeddah after his arrest before the Nigerian government intervened which led to his release.
Sources and Credible media reported that he was sentenced on February 16th 2012, to four life terms plus 50 years without parol after so many foreign assassination attempts and successful ones.
Nigerian Government' s History Of Support For Terrorism Suspects
Immediately after Sheikh Gumi' s release, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, a former Military President claimed that the " release of Sheikh Ahmad Abubakar Gumi in far away Saudi Arabia will further help cement and sustain the existing relationship between the government of Nigeria and that of Saudi Arabia. "
According to Vanguard, the Nigerian government celebrated his return immediately he was released by the Saudi Arabian government.
Few days ago, amidst the call for Isa Pantami' s resignation, Garba Shehu, President Buhari' s spokesman showed support for the embattled Minister saying that " the government was contented with Pantami' s apologies over his past support for Taliban and Al- Qaeda. " He also went ahead describing the calls for his resignation as a " manufactured dispute. "
" The Minister has, rightly, apologised for what he said in the early 2000s, " Shehu said in a statement.
" The views were absolutely unacceptable then and would be equally unacceptable today, were he to repeat them. But he will not repeat them– for he has publicly and permanently condemned his earlier utterances as wrong, " he added.
Femi Fani Kayode Reacts
Nigerian Minister who is by the name Fani Kayode exploded over the federal government' s decision not to sack the Minister who is now controlling the nation' s database saying, " I will not mention names but when a Salafist terrorist who says he loves Al Qaeda & the Taliban, who says Osama Bin Ladin was a better Muslim than him, who says he is happy when " unbelievers" are killed, who says he will lead Muslims into Christian areas as their " commander" & avenge their deaths & who hates Christians & non- Muslims with a passion continues to occupy a critical & sensitive position in Govt. even after millions of Nigerians have demanded for his removal or resignation you know we are heading for the rocks. "
The Call For Isa Pantami' s Resignation Continues
Amidst all these, Nigerians have still called for the Minister' s resignation but ironically, it is and will be to no avail, being that the federal government is solidly behind him with claims that his apologies have been accepted.
Although the Minister apologized, blaming his past comments on immaturity, prominent Nigerians believe that such a man shouldn' t be allowed as a Minister in the country.
Gumi And Pantami: Birds Of A Feather?
Most worrisome is Sheikh Gumi' s support for Isa Pantami! Shekih Gumi' s arrest and detention in Saudi Arabia years ago now justifies his support for Isa Pantami. Many now see it that they both share things in common or perhaps, they are birds of a feather.

" You cannot Islamise the whole world. Jesus Christ came; he could not Christianise the whole world. Nobody can Islamise or Christianise Nigeria.
" All his actions, one hundred percent, shows he is not a terrorist. Those who are terrorists are after his life. The Minister should continue. His presence there is fighting the terrorist ideology.
" Show me, one person, he has killed. He has not killed anybody. He has not ordered the killing of anybody. Discard the fake news.
" The man is stabilizing a government among a section of youths, which we want them to come and join in nation- building. They should not throw him away. Leave him. He is not a terrorist sympathizer.
" And you people are fighting them. No. You should get more people like Pantami and put them in power. It will stabilize. Don' t remove him. You' ll regret, " Gumi said.
